Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions from prospective and new families. Don't see your question? Reach out through BeAScout.
What ages can join Cub Scouts?
Cub Scouts is for kids in kindergarten through fifth grade, both boys and girls. After fifth grade, Scouts cross over to a Scouts BSA Troop.
Do you have to be religious to join?
No. Cub Scouts is values-based and includes a Duty to God in the Scout Oath, but the Pack is open to families of all faiths and beliefs. Each family interprets Duty to God in a way that fits their tradition. Pack meetings are not religious services. Our chartered organization is American Legion Post 290 — families do not need to be Legion members.
How much does it cost?
Costs include national BSA registration, a council fee, and Pack dues (which cover supplies, awards, and special events). Some events have additional fees (camping, Day Camp). The exact amounts change year to year — ask at a meeting for current numbers. Financial assistance is available — cost should never keep a family from Scouting.
Do parents have to attend meetings?
Lions (kindergarten) require an adult partner present at each meeting. For older dens, you can stay or drop off — whatever works for your family. Pack-wide events are designed for the whole family to attend.
How much time does Cub Scouts take?
Plan for one Tuesday evening per week (~1 hour). Most months also have one Pack-wide event or outing. Families participate in as much as they can — we know schedules are busy.
My child is already part-way through the school year. Can they still join?
Yes! We accept new families year-round. Just come to a Tuesday meeting or register online — the Den Leader will help your Scout catch up on adventures already covered.
Where do you meet?
Ebenezer United Methodist Church — the Ministry Building — in Stafford, Virginia. Meetings are Tuesdays at 7:00 PM during the school year (with adjustments for holidays and special events — check the calendar).
What's a Den vs. a Pack?
A den is a small group of Scouts in the same grade. They meet together with a Den Leader to work on adventures. The Pack is all the dens combined — the whole unit. Pack Meetings happen about once a month and bring everyone together.
Do I need to buy a uniform right away?
Don’t worry about it for your first meeting. Once you’ve decided to join, you’ll need a Cub Scout shirt (blue for grades K–3, tan for 4–5), neckerchief and slide (we provide these), and ideally a belt. Hand-me-downs are very common — ask the Pack before buying.
How do you handle communications?
- Scoutbook is the official source for the calendar, RSVPs, and advancement.
- Facebook (CubScoutPack907) is for photos and short updates.
- This website is for evergreen reference info.
- Den-specific chatter happens in whatever channel your Den Leader sets up.
Can siblings come to events?
Yes — family events like Pack camping, Pinewood Derby, and Blue & Gold explicitly welcome siblings. Den-specific meetings are typically just for the registered Scouts.
